Adapting to Permanent Daylight Saving Time

As we transition to permanent Daylight Saving Time, some students and families may notice temporary changes in sleep patterns, energy levels, and concentration.  Our bodies rely on regular exposure to light and consistent routines, so it may take a short time to adjust to the new schedule.

TIPS FOR STUDENTS

🌙 Prioritize Sleep

  • Aim for a consistent bedtime and wake-up time, even on weekends.
  • Begin winding down 30 to 60 minutes before bed by limiting screen time and bright lights.
  • Keep bedrooms cool, dark, and quiet to support quality sleep.

☀️ Get Morning Light

  • Spend time outdoors or near natural light early in the day.
  • Morning sunlight helps reset the body's internal clock and can improve alertness and mood.

🚶 Stay Active

  • Regular physical activity can help regulate sleep and boost energy levels.
  • A walk, bike ride, or sports activity after school can be especially beneficial.

📚 Be Patient with Yourself

  • It is normal to feel a little more tired or distracted during the first week or two of the adjustment.
  • If you are finding it difficult to focus, break tasks into smaller steps and make use of planners or reminders.

TIPS FOR FAMILIES

Establish Consistent Routines

  • Maintain regular meal, homework, and bedtime schedules.
  • Gradually adjusting bedtimes by 10 to 15 minutes over several days can help ease the transition.

Monitor Screen Time

  • Encourage device-free time before bed.
  • Bright screens in the evening can make it harder to fall asleep.

Check In

  • Talk with your child about how they are feeling.
  • Increased tiredness or irritability during the adjustment period is common and usually temporary.

SUPPORTING LEARNING AND WELL-BEING

Adequate sleep is linked to improved attention, memory, learning, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.  By maintaining healthy routines and being mindful of sleep habits, students can set themselves up for success both in and out of the classroom.  Thank you for supporting these routines at home as we adapt to this change together.
