Take Our Kids to Work Day (Gr. 9s) - November 6th

The Richmond School Board, in cooperation with The Student Commission of Canada, businesses, and the community, is proud to be involved in this exciting initiative which started in 1994. Each year, more than 200,000 students across Canada participate with their parent/guardians in Take Our Kids to Work.

Wednesday, November 6th, 2024, is the date for this event. Grade 9 students in Richmond will have the opportunity to go to work with a parent, relative, or adult friend. Some students may go with a classmates’ parent.

Learning first-hand about work and the range of career opportunities is an integral part of the curriculum. Take Our Kids to Work will provide opportunities for our Grade 9 students to:

  • See parents in different roles and responsibilities, and understand what they do to support the family.
  • Develop a closer dialogue with their parents or another caring adult.
  • Enhance their understanding of individual jobs in the context of the diverse working community.
  • Directly link classroom and workplace experiences.
  • Recognize the importance of continuous learning in pursuing career opportunities.
  • See the realities and demands of the workplace.
  • Understand the importance of staying in school.

A day at work will demonstrate the relevance of classroom lessons to students and adults. The project provides companies with an opportunity to showcase their work and to connect with members of tomorrow’s workforce. Employees can demonstrate how they work and the skills they require to work effectively.

What Can Parents/Guardians Do to Assist?

  1. Please encourage your Grade 9 student to become enthusiastically involved.
  2. Consider allowing a second Grade 9 student to accompany you and your child to work that day.
  3. Talk to your friends and colleagues about this day and its opportunities for them to become involved.
  4. Encourage your place of employment to endorse this program and to consider offering an invitation not to Grade 9 children of employees, but to other Grade 9 students who could benefit from the experience.
  5. Complete the Careers 9 Connections Class Assignment for TOKTW Day (after placement or interview on Nov. 6th.

Should your child not have a placement for this day, they are still required to interview an adult about their career/job in the to fulfill the requirement for Careers 9. Attached to this website post is the TOKTW Day Mandatory Assignment for ALL students.  It will also be found in your child’s Teams Connections Class.  It is due by uploading to Teams, completing within Teams, or handing in the hard copy by 4pm on November 8th.

This initiative appears to be a beneficial one from all perspectives – workplaces, educators, parents and most importantly, our youth. On page 2 of the first attachment is a Parent/Guardian Consent Form for you to fill out. Please take the time to assist us by completing the form and returning it to the school office by Friday, November 1st, 2024. There will also be copies of this consent form in the main office if you do not have access to a printer at home.

Classroom support will be available for students who choose to attend school.

Thank you,
