CRITERIA FOR MAJOR AWARDS

This year's Awards Evening is Wednesday, June 5th at 6pm.

1) TOP ALL-AROUND STUDENT AWARDS

Awarded to the students in each grade who have contributed exemplary all-around performance in academics, service & leadership at the school, good citizenship and involvement in extracurricular activities such as athletics and/or arts. Students in grades 8-12 self-nominate for this award using this online form in April. The due date is Friday, May 3rd at 4pm. The top all-around Grade 12 students are recognized as "Inspirational Students" and are considered for selection as the graduating Class Valedictorian, who also best represents the grad class, in June.

2) TOP ACADEMIC STUDENT AWARDS

An award is presented each year to the students with the highest overall academic achievement in all of their SLSS courses in each grade 8 to 12. These awards are decided by the Awards Committee.

3) TOP SUBJECT AWARDS

Students who distinguish themselves with outstanding achievement in subject areas may be recognized as subject award recipients. These awards are decided by staff in the participating departments.

4) PRINCIPAL'S HONOUR ROLL & HONOUR ROLL

A special certificate is presented to the grade 10-12 students who achieve all As (Principal's Honour Roll) all year. This is based on Semester One Final Marks and Semester Two Mid Term Marks in SLSS courses (excluding Connections). Any students with possible exceptional circumstances must see Mr. Nashlund before Thursday, May 2nd, 2024. There will be no Honour Roll for grade 8 & 9 students as the new Ministry of Education K-9 Reporting Order (Proficiency Scales) does not align with the criteria for Honour Roll.

Students on Honour Roll all year will also receive a certificate at the end of June, available for pick-up in the Main Office.

5) SERVICE AWARDS

Students who contribute over 30 hours of service are recognized with a "Service Award" certificate at the end of June. Students who contribute over 90 hours of service each year recognized with a "Major Service" award.  All hours must be documented and verified by a staff member on the self-reporting form. Hours must be volunteer and cannot be required as part of a course). Students must self-nominate using the form which can be printed off here, or picked up in the office. Due date is Friday, May 3rd at 4pm in the office.

6) THE PRINCIPAL'S AWARD

This major award is presented each year to the Grade 12 student who has maintained at least a "B" average and has demonstrated exemplary citizenship qualities and has given outstanding volunteer service for the benefit of others at SLSS. This award is decided by the Principal and the Awards Committee.

7) BILL EVANS PERSEVERANCE AWARD

Named after Mr. Bill Evans, beloved SLSS teacher from 1974-2010, this award recognizes the graduating student who has shown the most growth and improvement as both a student and a person, during their time at SLSS. This award is decided by the Awards Committee.

8) THE CULTURAL EDUCATION AWARD

This award recognizes the graduating student who demonstrates understanding and acceptance of others and actively seeks ways to bridge cultural differences at our school in both large and small ways. This award is decided by the Awards Committee.

 

AWARDS EVENING - MASTER OF CEREMONIES APPLICATION

The Awards Committee is looking for 2 Masters of Ceremonies to emcee this year's Awards Night Ceremony. The successful candidates will possess superior communication skills, written and oral, and must possess the ability to facilitate an event of this magnitude, including the ability to improvise as needed.

In addition, the successful candidates must demonstrate an excellent ability to work with other, meet tight deadlines, and make a significant time commitment to plan, organize, co-ordinate, and rehearse.

(Note: the emcees will be responsible to co-write the script with Mr. Nashlund).
